Out of the Mouth of Babes

Posted Monday, February 2, 2009, at 9:52 AM

My daughter just turned seven not long ago and it made me think of a lot of things, plus come to a few realizations:

#1. All the stuff I used to hate to hear from my parents mouths like, "you'll understand when you're older" I am saying to my own daughter... and I do understand!!!

#2. All the things I said I'd never do if I were a parent went out the window when I became one. Of course there still is a list but it's a far cry from the one I had before I was a parent.

#3. Suddenly my parents seem a lot more knowledgeable and sane then they did when I was 18.

and finally

#4. All the stories I get to tell my daughter when she has a boyfriend and I can truly embarass her. Here are my two favorites just for all of you:

a. When she was about 1 1/2 -2 years old we were at a hockey game in Sioux City and of course she got restless. So I took my daughter up to the concourse so she could run off some energy. Well, she ran that energy right into the men's restroom. I didn't know what to do. I didn't dare go in there to see al those men at the urinals, yet the only men with me at the game were two sections away and I didn't dare leave the door in case she did run out. So instead, I stood at the door and called her name. One guy called back in a girl's voice, "yes?" and then a few minutes after that a guy comes carrying her out and said she was hiding behind a urinal. Since my face was the color of a tomato I thanked him and quickly got her out of there. When I repeated the story to my co-workers they told me I had found a new way to meet men!

b. My daughter's most interesting questions come out on the road. This one started innocent enough. "Mom, how old are you?" Course, I think this is totally innocent and answer truthfully, "27." Almost instantly she comes back "And you're not dead yet?" My horrified and stupefied self could only come up with this answer, "No, and grandma's twice my age, thank you!" Never again will I assume that any question out of a child's mouth could be so innocent....

May you all have stories to share and people to share them with.

I started blogging about my fun experiencing parenthood and have found it has evolved into more than just parenting - its an observation of life as we know it. I'm a bystander in this country just as we all are, and sometimes, opinions just need to be said without fear of being burnt at the stake.
