Crazy Drivers Drive Me Crazy

This past Saturday I was on the way to a hockey game in Sioux City with my 7 year old daughter, who just loves to ask questions (many of them the ones you spend more time figuring out how to answer then actually answering). Anyways, I depart on to 75 via the hwy 3 bypass and get behind a SLOW moving Buick and am unable to move over because tow people are passing me. I unfortunately had to touch the brakes, making the truck swerve a bit yet managed to keep it in my lane. I did get around these people as fast I could, however, and my daughter and I are now shaking. So then of course she asks, "Why are we on the road if it's this bad?"

So as I'm trying to be a "safe" driver I explain to her the road isn't that bad, it's the drivers. (I know, a lost cause right?) I mean, roads can be bad, as we have definetly witnessed these past couple of weeks, but Saturday night they weren't great but you were safe as long as you did oh... 55 or so and watched the road. So then of course we pass an accident with two tow trucks getting the vehicles out of the ditch, then one more coming out of the ditch and finally another one stuck in the ditch. This has my daughter practically jumping out of her seat and asking, "What were you thinking? We're going to be in an accident for sure!"

Again I reassure her that we're doing fine (as two semis pass me and I'm quaking in my boots) and that I'm more worried about other drivers. You all know the type (probably because most of us have been one at some time, myself included) The type that are always in a hurry, always going faster than five miles over the speed limit and even when the other side of the road is slush and slippery snow they think it's important to beat you. I'm sorry but I truly believe these are the people that make accidents happen.

Awhile back read a comment about how one person thought that if you end up in the ditch in the winter you should be punished by having your car stay there all winter for not knowing how to drive on winter roads. Overall I think this person was generally right, but they do not take into account the people that go into the ditch because of the crazy drivers. If you are born and/or raised anywhere North of Kansas City, LEARN HOW TO DRIVE IN WINTER. Winter will not go away, it is not just a "passing" thing and there are so many people other than you out on the road that are just as important as you. I know that's hard to swallow for some, but hey, for those few, don't expect me to feel sorry for you because you were going to fast, slid in the ditch and now are very cold because you also didn't know it was WINTER IN IOWA.

Thanks and I hope you all have a safe trip!

I started blogging about my fun experiencing parenthood and have found it has evolved into more than just parenting - its an observation of life as we know it. I'm a bystander in this country just as we all are, and sometimes, opinions just need to be said without fear of being burnt at the stake.
