Steve King Does it AgainPosted Saturday, January 16, 2010, at 1:16 PM
Freshly rested from patting himself on the back for his vote against federal assistance for the victims of hurricane Katrina, King has found a new opportunity to display his callous disregard for human suffering. Some people see pictures of mass graves, men and women struggling for the basic essentials of life, or children crying in the streets for their lost parents and feel a sense of compassion. Some feel the need to give. Aid workers and politicians have heightened the cry for granting undocumented Haitians in the U.S. Temporary Protected Status (TPS). TPS is a longstanding cornerstone of U.S. immigration policy that is afforded to undocumented immigrants from a small number of federally designated countries suffering armed conflicts, natural disasters, or other extraordinary circumstances until conditions improve. But not Steve King. King, the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Immigration, sees this as a great opportunity to add to the suffering. King told ABC News last week that he thinks a new push to grant Haitian refugees temporary protection status is a political move by immigration activists. He also suggested that it may be better to deport Haitians so they could "contribute to the relief effort" there. King's republican colleagues with Haitian populations in their districts have distanced themselves from his remarks. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) have called on President Obama to grant TPS to undocumented Haitian immigrants, "a virtual lifeline for such an impoverished country." Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind) has issued a press release calling on the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to grant TPS for 18 months to Haitian immigrants. In King's defense, his staff has done some damage control by putting links to Haitian relief organizations on his official website. Whether or not King himself will donate, or better yet... go to Haiti in person to aid with relief efforts (He seems aware of the need), is yet to be seen. If King's comments disgust you as much as they do me, I encourage you to make a monetary donation to any of the Haitian relief efforts. Let's see....the Haitian people just lost 100,000 to 200,000 of their citizens. We have in this country over 100,000 Haitian citizens here illegally. I say it is only logical to send those illegal Haitians home. Replacements.
By the way, who is this Sen. Lugar from Iowa?
Lugar is from Indiana first off.
Second of all... wow. Did I really see you use the term "replacements" while talking about people? These are PEOPLE we're talking about. Sending any Haitian immigrants back, whether here legally or not, will NOT "replace" the ones the were lost in this disaster. That is one of the most ridiculous and callous statements I've heard.
Thanks TJ for the info on ways to donate. It is truly sad that some people really don't feel anything for people who have and still are suffering.
Gee, do you think I was being just a bit hyperbole in my comments to match those of TJ?
OK, then tell me why all Haitians in this country that have been here illegally for years are now given TPS? Does that make any sense to you?
Aid to the Haitians for this incredible tragedy is one thing, but to grant full and permanent* rights to aid and assistance to Haitian living in THIS country due to this earthquake for no other reason than they are Haitian is, well, just what Bobo the Post Turtle does everyday....stupid!
I guess a very cynical person would say Bobo is just creating more voters that will vote for take other people's money.
I am for more and quicker aid to the people of Haiti. There is no other country on the face of the earth that is better at giving of themselves and their riches than Americans. But I don't think we have done enough yet....not even close.
But this TPS is for political reasons at home and doesn't help the Haitian people that really need aid....not even close.
"That is one of the most ridiculous and callous statements I've heard."
Then I say you need to get out more. If you think my tongue in cheek statement, which was meant to be stupid, pay attention to what Bobo, the Post Turtle and his Crew say every day and you will get your fill of stupid statements.
Now, get your "plastic" out and give to the Red Cross. These poor people need our help.
* There is nothing so permanent in life as "temporary" status given by our government. Of the other five countries given this status, over 10 years later their citizen are still on TPS.
"...just a bit hyperbole in my comments to match those of TJ"
Pilot, don't try to pin your disgusting comment on me. Man up and own it. Your backtracking and deflection are obvious.
fleshwound, thanks for your input. I think you said what a lot of us are thinking. I think we all have to realize that Pilot is a guy who sees the growing numbers of people dying and going bankrupt due to our broken health care system and claims that doing nothing is the best option.
He's also used the comment section of this blog as a platform to solicit funds for a Massachusetts Republican who was one out of only three legislators who voted to deny financial aid to Red Cross rescue workers who had volunteered with 9/11 recovery efforts.

As a bonus, during the same month that this guy Pilot was fundraising for was voting down efforts to support 9/11 rescue workers, he was pushing a bill to appropriate a tax-subsidized bond to build a golf course in Norfolk, a city in his district.

What was discussing about saying the country of Haiti needs replacements? They do. Also, why is giving those Haitians that are here special status because of what happened back in the country they abandoned? I guess that if there was a large earthquake in Mexico you would be all in favor of giving legal status to all the illegal Mexicans here. Well, would you?
p.s., I'll compare my charitable giving to yours any day of the week and twice today.
"I guess that if there was a large earthquake in Mexico you would be all in favor of giving legal status to all the illegal Mexicans here."
A straw man argument is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position.
A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue.
Nice two-fer!
"I'll compare my charitable giving to yours any day..."
Unlikely and another irrelevant red herring. How about you leave this space for relevant big-boy discussion?
Emphasize "Again". Rewind King's record on immigration. He has a callous logic that would make a Vulcan cringe!
"We could also electrify this wire with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it. We do that with livestock all the time." Rep. Steve King, on ideal border fences, immigrants, and livestock."

illegal immigration... TPS... citizenship... lets face it, the real problem is control and manipulation. Illegal immigration really isn't a problem in the US, there are already laws for enforcement on the books. Think of it this way, why would anyone come here if they couldn't get work to support themselves? we have an employer problem and identity theft problem. not an illegal immigration problem. Besides, it is time we really start looking at issues globally, where they really make more sense.
The real problem here is there was a terrible trajedy in a country where people can barely support themselves and they need help. For our country, who is able to help, to do nothing would be wrong.
This country, The United States of America, is doing more than all the other countries combined. This is a good thing. We, The United States of America, gives aid to people in need more and better that any country ever in the history of mankind.
But let's make sure we are giving this aid to those that actually need this aid. Haitians that are already in this country are not, repeat, NOT, in need of this emergency aid. They have no need for TPS (Temporary Protective Status).
We, this country, gave over $100 billion, that's with a "B", in aid to the people effected by Katrina. Remember that there were fewer than 2000 dead in the Katrina storm. Yes, that is a lot but compared to the 100,000 to 200,000 dead in Haiti.....not so much.
Now give as much as you can.
Thank God for the United States of America and her great people. Also, all the other great people around the world that are doing their best to help this poor country.
Fewer than 2000 dead in the Katrina storm. Good lord 7d7d7, you really have no idea!
TJ, I predict he will out last you, because you're smart enough to know when your beaten, and he thinks he having fun with you!
You will never have a legitimate discussion with this Big Bird, because that's not why he's here.
"At least 1,836 people lost their lives in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane."

"Fewer than 2000 dead in the Katrina storm. Good lord 7d7d7, you really have no idea!"
Ah, but I do.
"... and he thinks he having fun with you!"
Ah, but I am.
"You will never have a legitimate discussion with this Big Bird, because that's not why he's here."
Word.
Leslie C, I can't be "beaten" if I'm telling the truth. This isn't a competition with winners and losers. The only loser is the person who either purposefully promotes misinformation or refuses to acknowledge that they are mistaken.
I don't think I've ever "lost" because I deal in facts and honesty. If I'm mistaken and corrected, I appreciate it. I don't "lose". That's the difference between discussion, debate, and arguing for the sake of arguing (as Pilot does).
Pilot may think he's "won" simply because he's still talking long after everyone else has rolled their eyes and gone home; but the reality is that everyone is laughing at him, not with him.
You know, when I first started this blog someone asked me, "Do you really think you'll change people's minds with your writing?". My answer has always been "no". I'm not here to change people's minds. I'm here to help inform people and share my perspective.
I do, however, think that the irrational and faulty arguments from some of the commenters will actually change people's minds. I think those folks have done plenty to make progressivism look good and the resistance to reform masquerading as "conservatism" look bad. Pilot's a good example. I'm sure you can pick out a few of the others from past entries.
"Leslie C, I can't be "beaten" if I'm telling the truth. This isn't a competition with winners and losers. The only loser is the person who either purposefully promotes misinformation or refuses to acknowledge that they are mistaken."
With that I agree fully.
You rarely tell the truth in your posts. Not that you lie. What you do is present opinion as truth. I'm sure other besides me understand this. So long as people understand your arguments are based on opinion there is nothing wrong with them. I have a way different opinion than you do. That is what makes these blogs fun and informative....and I thank you for giving of your opinions.
Example?
Surely if I "rarely tell the truth in my posts" you can provide one instance where I've misrepresented "opinion as truth". I'll be waiting.
7d7d7. Because you THINK you know, doesn't mean that you do. In fact, when you deny the possibility that you don't, you can't know if you do or not! (sorry if that's a little deep. Make sure you have a flotation device)
TJ. I didn't say you were beaten. I said, you were smart enough to know when you were, which implies someone else might not.
Oh yeah! Almost forgot...
