Gehlen seniors perform final dance and Monday recapPosted Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at 1:25 AM
The Gehlen boys basketball team's upset bid of perennial power Unity Christian fell short Monday. While the 48-38 final score doesn't do justice to how close the game really was, the Jays really have no one to blame but themselves as they shot an abysmal 3-for-14 from the free throw line. The disappointing thing for Gehlen fans is the fact that the Jays did so many other things well in the loss. They matched the Knights in quickness and intensity (though obviously not in height). Their defense held star Austin Katje to just seven points - eight below his average - though the Dordt College-bound senior did eclipse the 1,000-point career mark with his second basket of the night. Drew Kellen also grabbed 11 rebounds before fouling out with a couple minutes left, an impressive total when you factor in the fact that no player under 6-foot-2 saw the court for the Knights. On hand was Akron-Westfield coach Craig Doty, along with seniors Alex Frankl and Eric Eskra, who were scouting for tomorrow night's game. At halftime of the boys game, the senior dance team members performed their final routine. I have to admit it was a rather poignant moment as the emotions for the girls (and their families and friends) were no doubt running high as they danced to Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry." Check out that video here:
The Gehlen girls scored their first win over Unity Christian of head coach Marty Kurth's career as they handed the Knights a 66-60 defeat. Unlike the boys, the Lady Jays made their free throws down the stretch to salt the game away. Now on the the Stars: 1. Steph Rohe, Gehlen girls Rohe scored 16 points, grabbed five steals and made three key free throws in the waning moments of Gehlen's win over Unity. 2. Drew Kellen, Gehlen boys Kellen grabbed 11 rebounds against a tall Unity team in a 48-38 loss. 3. Austin Homan, Le Mars boys Homan's put-back with 30 seconds provided the final margin as the Le Mars boys secured second placed in the Lakes Conference with a 58-57 win at Cherokee. 4. Jessie Timmins, Gehlen girls Timmins scored a team-high 18 points in the Lady Jays' win over visiting Unity on Monday. Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa! ![]() - Archives - Blog RSS feed - Comments RSS feed - Login I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing.
Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here.

Oh, sweetness and sadness. I just looked up the story on Tamara - watching the video had me tearing up - you can see the emotion. And, it could have been your sister out on that dance floor as well. Thanks for sharing♥
