White outPosted Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 5:26 PM
Thursday's snow/wind has eliminated all of our evening sporting events. With the BCS "championship" game on tonight, I can't say we are too disappointed. And here I thought a "White-out" was just a Penn State grass roots intimidation tactic when lesser Big 10 programs visit Happy Valley. (Speaking of Happy Valley: does anyone know who lives on 12th Street and has "Happy Valley" on their mailbox?) Check Friday's paper for Bethany's column about what's bugging her. I wanted to call it "What grinds my gears" in homage to Peter Griffin's segment on his local news station in Quahog, Rhode Island, but Bethany wouldn't stand for it. Friday's paper will also have the recap of both Kingsley-Pierson basketball games. The girls lost badly, but the boys once again played close with Woodbury Central before losing 47-43. The Panthers have been extremely competitive this year, but have yet to get over the hump and claim that first win. They have had a tremendous influx of young talent in the past few years, including sophomore Tate Rohde and freshman Colin Henrich. Sophomore Evan Colfack is an absolute animal on the boards - he pulled down 16 against Woodbury Central on Tuesday and if you've seen the Wildcats, you know that's no small feat. James Wright (whose older brother was on the team last season - you can see which jokes we cracked at the office) leads Woodbury Central in scoring and rebounds and is probably 6-5 or so. Colfack's probably only 6-2 or so, but he's thick. He clearly held his own against the taller Wildcats. I also neglected to laud the performance of Hinton's Tyler Stuerman in the Blackhawks' 52-49 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Tuesday. Stuerman had his first triple-double of the season and it was no 10-10-10 feat. He had 21 points, 18 rebounds and an astounding 14 blocks. Even more astounding to me is that the 14 blocks are not even a Hinton school record. Coach Phil Skamser said the record is something like 18 or 19. Stuerman is averaging nearly as many rebounds (11.6) per game as points (12.0). He is also averaging 4.6 blocks after Tuesday's outburst. Enjoy the BCS "championship" game tonight and don't forget to check out our new video from Tuesday's games up on our page. Bethany did the editing!!! |
Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa! ![]() - Archives - Blog RSS feed - Comments RSS feed - Login I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing.
Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here.
I am a native of Mount Vernon, Wash., the hometown of NBA/MLB journeyman Mark Hendrickson, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (a high school teammate), actor Jim Caviezel, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and most notably, Glenn Beck.
Here you'll find (almost) daily updates, photos and ruminations about the sports scene in Plymouth County.
