Karate...and basketballPosted Friday, December 11, 2009, at 10:15 PM
I had a Cosmo Kramer moment today at the YMCA. I was shooting hoops by myself in the gym when a group of sixth-graders asked me if I wanted to play "Knockout" with them. (This was the first I've heard of "Knockout" - we always called it "Bump.") I figured "why not?" and joined their game. We also played a little football and wrapped up by playing a game of two-on-two which is much easier when you're a foot taller than everyone else. All told, I felt a lot like Kramer taking karate classes with 10-year-olds and beating up on them. I've embedded the "Seinfeld" clip for your amusement.
I just got back from Remsen where the Rockets hosted Remsen St. Mary's in a cross-town rivalry grudge match. I should say the girls game was not really much of a grudge match. RSM led 31-8 at the half and pulled away for the 47-23 win. The Rockets started off the boys game quickly before RSM closed the gap with a solid middle two quarters. But the wheels came off for the Hawks in the fourth as Kraig Alesch and Alex Hansen teamed up to score about 15 points between the two of them in the final eight minutes and give R-U the 54-34 victory. The most entertaining part of the fourth quarter were the chants from the RSM student section. They began with "Let's play football," (RSM beat R-U in district play this fall), though I feel that may be moot as RSM graduates a number of talented players. Then they followed with "God's on our side," a tribute to their Catholic faith. It was also "Coaches vs. Cancer" night and a number of athletes wore pink socks and/or shoelaces. Plenty of fans on each side were decked out in pink and you'll be able to see some color photos in Monday's Daily Sentinel. It's also worth noting that RSM sophomore Beau Pick made a half-court shot to earn a $3 prize at halftime. He was apparently unsatisfied because he tried again later and missed. Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa! ![]() - Archives - Blog RSS feed - Comments RSS feed - Login I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing.
Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here.
I am a native of Mount Vernon, Wash., the hometown of NBA/MLB journeyman Mark Hendrickson, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (a high school teammate), actor Jim Caviezel, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and most notably, Glenn Beck.

Tell me you didn't wipe up the floor with any of these CHILDREN :)
About Friday's RSM-RU game--what's the big deal?? Only a few parents are having a problem.
Since when is standing up for your beliefs wrong?
"God's on our side" is simply a true statement, no one said "God's on our side, not on your side." If you read more into it than what was said, that's your problem.
