A quiet weekendPosted Sunday, July 5, 2009, at 11:00 PM
Hard to believe the playoffs are starting this week. That's right - the Class 1A and 2A softball regional playoffs commence Wednesday and Thursday.
Class 2A baseball starts Saturday and 1A baseball starts next week Tuesday. Since there was no paper on Friday, I feel like I should highlight some of the solid performances from Thursday on. Granted, Tanner Dowling's grand slam was the big blow, but honorable mention has to go to Gehlen's Shaun Ryan. The junior outfielder hit his first career homer at South O'Brien on Thursday. With Friday's rain, just a handful of games were played: the Akron-Westfield-Hinton baseball game was not one of them, as intern Nick and I found out - after driving to Akron. Be sure to check out Bethany's column on murdered Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas and (allegedly) murdered former NFL quarterback Steve McNair in Monday's Sentinel. A couple of interesting links for you. First, in case you don't subscribe to Sports Illustrated, here is the cover story on Ed Thomas: http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/v... Second, here is the link to the previous issue detailing the perfect game/no-hitter combo turned in by two Norwalk teammates (I just moved, so I got these two issues one day apart - one directly from SI and the other with a Post Office forwarding sticker): |
Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa! ![]() - Archives - Blog RSS feed - Comments RSS feed - Login I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing.
Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here.
I am a native of Mount Vernon, Wash., the hometown of NBA/MLB journeyman Mark Hendrickson, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (a high school teammate), actor Jim Caviezel, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and most notably, Glenn Beck.
Here you'll find (almost) daily updates, photos and ruminations about the sports scene in Plymouth County.
