Ready for the weekend

Posted Friday, June 19, 2009, at 12:32 AM

It was a relatively quiet night on the baseball front on Thursday, which is just fine as we have a jam-packed weekend ahead.

Tomorrow I will be shooting the Ice Cream Days 3-on-3 basketball tournament and later heading up to Granville to watch Akron-Westfield battle the Spalding Catholic Spartans.

Saturday I'll be at the J Club tournament as the Gehlen baseball team squares off against Newell-Fonda and Kingsley-Pierson. I'll also be competing in my first (quasi) competitive race since eighth grade as I plan to run in Saturday evening's Tom Skram Fun Run.

The run is only 2.5 miles, but if the weather is anything like today, that will be perfectly adequate. I'm not sure who would every want to run a 10K. That's about 5K more than I would ever feel is necessary.

It will be interesting to see which local athletes will run in which race. I was at Taco Johns on Monday when I overheard Gehlen track/cross country runner Josh Hodgson say he was going to run the 2.5 mile race. If XC runners are choosing the shorter race, I wonder who will run the 10K.

And for the record, I have no idea where Solon is. I just know they breed athletes and are always competitive at state in just about every sport.

GO JESSE! One of the teachers at WA was taking her kids to the B-EHS field for summer track meets, starting last night. Remember when? :)

I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing. Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here. I am a native of Mount Vernon, Wash., the hometown of NBA/MLB journeyman Mark Hendrickson, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (a high school teammate), actor Jim Caviezel, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and most notably, Glenn Beck. Here you'll find (almost) daily updates, photos and ruminations about the sports scene in Plymouth County.
