Track season begins
Posted Monday, March 15, at 10:22 PM
The Northwestern College women's basketball team defeated Briar Cliff for the third time in four tries this season to advance to the title game of the NAIA Tournament, so watch Bethany's blog for more on that.

Up in Sioux Center, the War Eagle Conference hosted its annual indoor track meet at Dordt College. Check the paper tomorrow for photos. No official results were kept, so all we've got are the results called in for the Hinton boys and the Gehlen girls.

Steph Rohe continued where she left off for the Lady Jays as she placed first in both the 55-meter and 200-meter hurdle events.

And University of Iowa men's basketball coach was let go today after a 10-22 season. We'll have to see if that impacts Heelan's Zach McCabe. My guess is not as he has already signed his Letter of Intent and most schools are not eager to release their athletes from those commitments.

Selection Sunday
Posted Sunday, March 14, at 4:05 PM

Three NW Iowa teams win state titles. If that doesn't tell us where the best basketball is played in the state, I don't know what does. Check out my column tomorrow for more on that. We're going to be getting out of here early to go watch the NCAA selection show...

State and NAIA tournaments update
Posted Thursday, March 11, at 5:53 PM

So Western Christian, which has never lost a state title game in which it has participated, is back in the Class 3A championship game as the Wolfpack held off Cinderella Kuemper Catholic 64-57 in the semifinals. Western faces Solon in a rematch of last year's double-overtime semifinal contest won by the Spartans - the game that should have been the championship, but was not, thanks to the ever peculiar seeding system employed by the IHSAA...

The rich do indeed get richer
Posted Tuesday, March 9, at 2:32 PM

I thought I had some interesting news when I opened the SCJ this afternoon and read that SC West's Wesley Staten is transferring to Heelan. But avid reader westerner88 posted it about three hours ago on Bethany's blog, so the best I can do is provide some context...

Will spring sports ever start?
Posted Sunday, March 7, at 7:48 PM

I saw Le Mars tennis player Brian Kehm at the YMCA on Friday. He said they're scheduled to sweep all the snow off the court sometime in the next couple of weeks. Tennis practice officially begins for boys on March 22 and girls on March 15, so we'll see if that will actually happen. I have heard from one source that the Farmer's Almanac is calling for another big snow storm in March...

Winter Dance Expo video
Posted Tuesday, March 2, at 8:42 PM

In case you haven't already heard, unranked Lawton-Bronson, who upset Hinton the first round of the Class 2A regional tournament, bowed out to No. 3 OA/BC-IG in the quarterfinals of the state tournament on Monday. We could discuss the relative merits of having two teams from the same conference play in the first round of the state tournament, but, well, that's what happens when two conference rivals somehow wind up in different regions...

Things have slowed down...but only in one regard
Posted Friday, February 26, at 12:39 PM

Not a whole lot of news to report as all our teams have been eliminated from the postseason. But that doesn't mean things have slowed down as we are getting started on our All-Sentinel supplement to the paper. We will continue to post updates as they become available from the world of Plymouth County sports. For now, be sure to check out my column:...

The song is over...
Posted Tuesday, February 23, at 10:31 PM

And just like that, our winter sports are done. Gehlen hung tough with No. 3 and defending Class 1A state champion Rock Valley for about three quarters, but ultimately had no answer for 6-9 "Twin Towers" Jordan Dykstra and Marcus Heemstra, who combined for 45 points...

And then there really was just one
Posted Monday, February 22, at 11:04 PM

I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. To directly quote MOC-FV boys basketball coach Loren De Jong after Monday's Class 3A district game at Le Mars, "I think it's a shame that Le Mars and us had to play the first round. Le Mars is a great team and fortunately for us, we got off to a good start and they had some struggles."...

I am not a native Midwesterner, but I have now lived in Le Mars for a little more than a year and accumulated my share of Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Jays and Bulldogs clothing. Prior to moving here, I had been to Iowa a half-dozen times to see my relatives in Hull, so naturally I assumed everyone in Iowa was Dutch and Christian Reformed. I certainly never thought I would live here. I am a native of Mount Vernon, Wash., the hometown of NBA/MLB journeyman Mark Hendrickson, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (a high school teammate), actor Jim Caviezel, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and most notably, Glenn Beck. Here you'll find (almost) daily updates, photos and ruminations about the sports scene in Plymouth County.
