Gehlen Girls Impressive

Posted Monday, February 27, 2012, at 5:15 PM

North Butler might have suffered from over confidence, having won 19 of their 21 wins by more than 20 points. You can bet they hadn't run into a better 1-2-2 defense. The Gehlen chasers did a good job and the team collapsed to the ball very quickly.

When Gehlen, with a 20 point lead, effectively stalled the entire last quarter it reminded me of the (bad) old days of 6-on-6 ball. Then it was illegal for a defensive girl to grab the ball if the offensive player had control. When an underdog got an early lead the game could be quite a snoozer. I recall Lawton beating somebody that way, by a four to two score, and although unpopular, the tactic wasn't that unusual.

Web Kurth's grandson can coach basketball, too! The Rohe family has some athletes! I was pleased to be re-united with Steph's grandmother Phyliss Muhlbauer. Her husband, Lou, and I sat side by side in the legislature for four years and Phyliss was Lou's secretary. I was really impressed by Katelin Langel's play, and the team in general.

Bedford, Wednesday nights opponent, lost only one game, by three points, to a team they had beaten by nine. Only three teams came within seven points of them and they, too, won most by more than 20 points. Those stats might lead one to think Gehlen is in a tougher conference. After all, they can now finish no worse than fourth in the state and they finished fourth in their conference!

Go Jays! Hey, can anyone tell me what St. Joseph's (Gehlen's predecessor) mascot/nickname was?
