Michael Jordan and the Myth

Posted Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at 5:39 PM

The 1-16-2012 issue of Sports Illustrated has a revealing eight page article about the great basket baller, MJ, and his relationship with Pop Herring, his high school coach.

Jordan was a great player, maybe even matching his large ego. This article is not complimentary to Jordan, who publicly chastised Herring for "cutting" him as a HS sophomore, but that didn't happen. Thereby, the "Myth of the Cut," exposed in the SI issue.

With ten seniors on the team, the 5' 10" Jordan was placed on the JV team, where playing regularly instead of riding the bench, he blossomed. He became a star in his next two years, but Herring's best teams would be later.

"Pop," only 26 and not wealthy, took the financially well-off MJ(Mike then)under his wing then, but today Herring lives a sad, neglected, poverty, and illness stricken life while MJ is on top of the world.

When MJ's number was retired by the Chicago Bulls, and later, he dissed "Pop," unfairly says the article by Thomas Lake. It is worthwhile reading, even for non-sports fans.
