Random Budget Cut Thoughts
Posted Friday, March 8, at 7:07 PM Temporary furloughing employee is a good way to reduce budgets temporarily, maybe permanently. For permanent solutions this is a good way to identify less productive employees. Union rules can make this difficult. Sometimes when funds are cut govt realizes they can get by with less $$ and fewer employees...
Those Darn Harkin Papers Senator Tom Harkin has decided to un-donate his papers to the Harkin Institute at Iowa State University. I know of a college which would be a more appropriate repository for the Senator's 40 years of history. Seward County Community College is located in Liberal, Kansas...
Interpreting the 2nd Amendment "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." (2nd Amendment) I am not stating an opinion, rather asking for clarification; Is there any reason that "Arms" does not allow an M1 rocket launcher, 2.36 inch, solid tube shoulder mount 'Bazooka'?...
Government website encourages welfare The number of government dependents now exceeds the number of private sector workers in California, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Maine, Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico and Hawaii. Seven of those states were won by Barack Obama...
More snow - less for gas As gas prices averaged $3.12 across Iowa, the Des Moines area enjoyed $2.97. In fact, it has been below $3 for some time. It is only fair - when Le Mars was getting two or three inches of snow we were blessed with more than a foot, enhanced by blizzard winds for about 24 hours...
States Rights? Oh yeah! President Barack Obama says federal authorities should not target recreational marijuana use in Washington state and Colorado. He cites "....limited government resources and growing public acceptance of the controlled substance," despite direct opposition of federal law...
Here Come the Extra Costs! A Post-Election surprise, and there will be more. USA Today reports that perhaps 190 million Americans will be hit with a new, $63-per-head annual fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Obama's health care overhaul...
Lets just jump over the cliff! We should jump, not fall, over the "fiscal cliff." Some alcoholics have to hit bottom before they can crawl out of the bottle -- our Federal Government is an alcoholic whose "bottle" is spending far more than it takes in. Any compromise is likely to be somewhat temporary and the intake/outgo problem will continue. Lets just "Git er done!" Jump the cliff! Government spending in the United States far exceeds our revenues, the widest spending/taxing gulf in any major economy...
Feigned "Birther" outrage From the 8-24-2012 New York Daily News -- "Mitt Romney outraged the Obama's campaign........" President Obama threw a hissy fit when Mitt Romney said, --(CNN) "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that I was born and raised." "With that comment to a crowd in Michigan, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney officially embraced the "birther" movement and touched off a firestorm of protest across the airwaves and internet."...
Somebody else didn't "If you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own, there was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." (President Obama, July 13)...
A Quiz For You I took an internet quiz today, entitled "Do you know more about the political parties than the average American?" I did quite well. But then, I should have, since it was on politics. The reason I am writing is to suggest you take a look at it, at info@pewresearch.org. I know Midwesterners will do better than the average male (8.4 of the 13 questions), female (7.5), or even college graduates at 9.9 of the 13 questions...
I hope you won't go While the pink slime pot boils nationally, on the local level, have you heard about the boycott efforts by a loose knit coalition of several Le Mars Realtors, Electricians and Ministers? They are urging local restaurants to stop serving lamb, and asking grocery stores to stop selling the product! Concerned citizens have been encouraged to join them in front of Le Mars grocers tomorrow at noon, a spokesman says...
Lean Fine Textured Beef is Good! Have you ever heard of Congresswoman Pingree, Senator Menendez, Senator Gillibrand, Change.org, or even Jamie Oliver and the Food Revolution? I didn't think so, but the instigator of the hostile, anti Lean Fine Textured Beef (LFTB), petition thinks that with their support her crusade is in good shape. I hope not...
Malia does Mexico! I'd guess peer pressure was involved. A 7.6 earthquake struck Acapulco, Mexico, Tuesday. 200 miles east in Oaxaca, Malia Obama is safe, although the quake rattled that area. On Monday, several news outlets, including The Huffington Post, reported that Malia Obama, 13, her friends, and about 25 Secret Service agents were on spring break in Oaxaca, Mexico. ...
Coach Denny Muller Gehlen fans might want to get to Wednesday's 6:45 game vs Bedford a bit early. The 5:30 game is Ames vs Southeast Polk, so former Gehlen great FB coach Denny Muller of SE Polk is likely to be in the gym.
Gehlen Girls Impressive North Butler might have suffered from over confidence, having won 19 of their 21 wins by more than 20 points. You can bet they hadn't run into a better 1-2-2 defense. The Gehlen chasers did a good job and the team collapsed to the ball very quickly...
Houston, We Have a Problem How many hours do you suppose a major channel like CNN or FOX News would devote to the accidental death of, for instance, a half dozen Homeland Security Air Marshals? Maybe three, or four hours in total? I'd guess not even that much, and it speaks volumes for (and against) our society that they spent hour upon hour, day after day covering the death, funeral and life of (one) Whitney Houston. ...
Iowa State Athletes In my column, which appears each Monday in the Sentinel, on the 30th I mentioned several former Iowa State basketball players from Plymouth County. I should have included Dave Meis. I also mentioned Hall of Fame gridder/coach Harley Rollinger from Le Mars. Here is a bit more about the late place kicker who played guard both ways...
Michael Jordan and the Myth The 1-16-2012 issue of Sports Illustrated has a revealing eight page article about the great basket baller, MJ, and his relationship with Pop Herring, his high school coach. Jordan was a great player, maybe even matching his large ego. This article is not complimentary to Jordan, who publicly chastised Herring for "cutting" him as a HS sophomore, but that didn't happen. Thereby, the "Myth of the Cut," exposed in the SI issue...
Ron Paul That Libertarian masquerading in sheep's clothing, Ron Paul, vows to bring home our military, saying we should just defend our borders. This would be a huge mistake, leaving South Korea and Japan, and the rest of Asia, at the mercy of huge armies and nuclear weaponry in North Korea and China. We learned, but some have forgotten, at Pearl Harbor not to wait until we have been attacked...
