Decision makingPosted Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at 11:22 AM
* Be not water, taking the tint of all colors. - Unknown
* Be the change you wish to see in the world. - Ghandi * We'll never know the worth of water 'till the well goes dry. - Scottish Proverb * What breaks in a moment may take years to mend. - Swedish Proverb * What goes around, comes around. - Unknown * What good is running when you're on the wrong road. - German * What you have, hold. - John Heywood (c.1497-1580) In making big decisions I keep a lot of old sayings in mind. My mother is the expert on old sayings, old wive's tales or urban legends as they are sometimes called. Trust me on this. Plus, she seems to always know the answer to everything. As a child I always remember the rants that followed a black cat running across the road in front of us and the squeal of the car tires veering us toward an alternate route. This is where the beliefs seemed to foster in me. I do not walk under ladders, I do not open umbrellas inside nor do I stay on the same road when a black cat crosses MY path, if I do I am certain for a day of doom. Big decisions face us everyday. Sometimes for some of us the decisions become crippling to the point that they never actually are made, and the indecisive stay on the path to self- destruction. Some people seem at ease with decision making. They love control, they need it, without total control they lose all control, seen it, not pretty. I am one of these that can't even decide what to wear to work in the morning until I am there for three hours and I finally figure out that I am uncomfortable. Note to self: Remember how short this shirt is before wearing again. As we grow older, we tend to mellow a bit. As we mature we take longer to make decisions, put more thought into them. I am finding this with my mother. She has always called me 'the analyzer' because I can think anything to death. Nowadays the shoe is on the other foot. It is me watching her stress, watching her hesitate, watching her ponder, analyze. She now has her first great-grand baby and is trying to decide if she wants to take her first-ever flight on the big steel bird in the sky to Florida, or not. For now I will just say that I have some advice. Taking your first flight is not easy, but... As I always say, nothing easy is worthwhile. Those of you who know someone who is holding themselves back from something they could really grow from, give them a piece of advice to help them take a leap of faith, but only if they are ready. That is what I have learned from old sayings and that is all the wise advice i have to offer for now, and i will remember when the broom falls, I know that company is due. Do you have any favorite old sayings you truly believe or hold stock in. Write me Let me know - dswebeditor@frontiernet.net.
