Back in the sports actionPosted Monday, November 30, 2009, at 2:35 PM
After a brief between seasons break (really, we had a break??), high school sports action resumes in high gear this week with a full slate of basketball and wrestling on Tuesday.
I got my first taste of the basketball season about two weeks ago at the Marcus Jamboree and have been to three nights of regular season contests since. Hats off to the Lady Bulldogs for a solid 2-1 start to the season and congrats to Hinton for winning its second straight Hy-Vee Tourney Championship. Tonight Hinton hosts River Valley and St. Mary's travels to Whiting. Be sure to pick up a copy of Monday's Daily Sentinel - it's jam-packed with good stuff, from pics and coverages of the Hy-Vee tourney to season previews and (drumroll) the Fall All-Sentinel special section. Jesse and I have unveiled the players of the year in volleyball, football and cross country in this 12-page special section. We also selected All-Plymouth County teams in football and volleyball. Continue reading the rest of the week as we wrap up the previews and bring you full coverage of the first full week of the winter season. And if you're still in the mood for some great volleyball, you're in luck. The NAIA Volleyball Championships are in Sioux City this week, featuring some local talent on teams from Morningside and Northwestern Colleges. I'm picking the third-ranked Red Raiders to win the whole thing - and that's not just bias, these girls are the real deal! So stop by the Tyson to check it out - pool play is Tuesday thru Thursday and the championship rounds will be Friday and Saturday. I'll have a bit of a preview in the Sentinel early this week as well. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and didn't go too crazy shopping on Black Friday (or Cyber Monday)! We'll see you on the sports trail... |
I'm a firm believer in the line "those who can't do, teach" - except that I don't teach, I write. I was never an athlete and I have the coordination of a one-year-old, but my passion for the game - any game really - is what drives me most.
I was born in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisc., which is probably why I am a Packer fan. And I'm not one of those fans who likes the Packers when they are good and cheers for other teams from week to week or season to season. No, I am a die-hard - I bleed green and gold and I think the Cheesehead is one of the more stylish head-wear pieces ever created.
After six years in Wisconsin, my family moved to Pella - where I consider to be my hometown. I went to Pella Christian High School - where I loved watching the sports! - and developed my love for photography and design. A side note - my sister (and one of my best friends) plays volleyball at Pella Christian, thus the occasional references to Eagles volleyball in my musings.
I graduated with a degree in business and journalism from Northwestern College in Orange City in December 2007. I enjoy keeping tabs on my alma mater and the first teams I ever covered as a journalist. My brother plays football for the Raiders, so that adds even more incentive to continue bleeding red.
Even though I am a sports-enthusiast of a seemingly male nature, I am also 100 percent girly-girl. I love shoes, purses and anything pink. Thus the blog title "Packer Pink and What I Think."
I am quite the random person so I may vary from topic to topic, but at the end of the day, I'm pretty much just sports and pink.
