Do you like sports?

I just got home from my best friend's wedding. Hold on, let me fix my grammar one second. My best friends' wedding. This weekend in Minnesota, I got to celebrate two of my best friends getting married...to each other. It was a wonderful, yet exhausting, weekend of making memories and happy tears. A few thoughts that I pulled from the weekend... Sara (the bride)'s sister gave the maid of honor toast and she shared questions that she asked her elementary school students about marriage. I remember lots of them, but one that made me smile was "Do you like sports?" Her young students believed you should ask this question before you decide to marry someone and that they should answer that question "yes!" Before her toast, Rich (aka groom)'s brother (aka best man) gave his toast and part of the advice he shared with his younger brother was to "turn off the tv when your wife is talking to you" and he also told Sara "don't talk to Rich when sports are on the TV." Good advice I think. I don't have any marital experience to base it on, but I would say that we are a group of many sports enthusiasts and sometimes they can be distracting. But I think its also important to note that sports can be a great connecting bond between two people. I don't think both people in a relationship need to like all the same things, for example the same sports team, but it is nice to have a similar interest in sports in general. I'm not really sure where this is all going, I guess I'm just observing some connecting factors in the beautiful relationship I have seen develop and that continues to develop in the lives of two of my friends. They both mean a lot to me...and we are all connected by interests in various athletics and I believe that is part of what makes us work as friends. So maybe what I'm saying is try to find some strong connecting interests with your friends this week. Maybe sports. High school baseball and softball starts this week. Enjoy the beautiful weather (now that its finally here!) and take in a game with some people you love. |
