National Champions

Congratulations to the Northwestern College women's basketball team and head coach Earl Woudstra on winning the NAIA D-II National Championship!

The Red Raiders completely dominated tonight's contest against No. 8 Shawnee State of Ohio as they won their second title in three years.

When NWC won the title in 2008, it was my senior class that brought home the trophy, banner and the rest of the batch of hardware.

The Tyson Events Center was packed with NW fans proudly wearing their Raider red tonight and it was a great night to be a Red Raider.

NW's Becca Hurley was named MVP of the tournament while Randa Hulstein (1st) and Kendra DeJong (2nd) also earned all-tourney team honors.

NW head coach Earl Woudstra, who happens to be my dad's cousin, was named NAIA Coach of the Year.

Liz Grider of Briar Cliff was chosen as the NAIA D-II Player of the Year.

I'll have more tomorrow and I'll post a picture or two. For now, I'm tired. I can't believe I'll have to get used to these late nights again in a few weeks - I've been enjoying a somewhat regular sleep schedule.

Congrats once more to my alma mater and the ladies on the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

I drove to Sioux City tonight for the NAIA national championship semifinal that pitted my alma mater Northwestern College against Briar Cliff University. I spent 35 minutes looking for a parking spot, the whole time debating if I should just drive back to Le Mars and listen to the game on the radio, before deciding to follow the trend of many other basketball fans and "create" my own spot rather than pay $7 to park in a nearby lot...

In search of a title....

Plymouth County may have been elimitated from the basketball title hunt already, but the pursuit is just heating up for many other teams across the state and across the country. Boys state basketball is underway in Des Moines right now - girls champions were crowned last weekend...

Looks like spring

When I stepped outside today, I was amazed at the power the warm sunshine had over me. Any negative thoughts were immediately cast aside and my mood improved 200 percent. I had nearly forgotten what sunshine teamed with 30-plus degree temperatures felt like. And in fact, as I write this, the Sentinel's weather guide says it is 41 degrees. Ah bliss...

With a hardfought effort...

The Gehlen Catholic boys played perhaps one of their best basketball games of the season last night. Obviously the result (a 75-51 loss) was not what they wanted, but I was hardpressed to find anything the Jays could feel bad about in the loss to the defending state champion Rock Valley Rockets...

Olympics and playoff basketball
Posted Monday, February 22, at 2:00 PM

With a week to go in the Winter Olympics, the US leads the medal count, just in case you missed that fact. I think the biggest complaint I have with this year's games is that my lack of disposable income is preventing me from watching the events I would enjoy (i.e. the USA vs Canada hockey game and any of the curling competitions) and forcing me to watch events that are dominated by countries that are not the USA (i.e. cross country skiing and the biathalon)...

And then there was one...

One girls basketball team remains in our Plymouth County coverage. The Le Mars girls dropped a heartbreaking regional quarterfinal at MOC-Floyd Valley, which is ranked sixth, tonight. Gehlen lost to Akron-Westfield on Tuesday night and the Lady Westerners are the lone girls team still in the title hunt in our coverage area...

District basketball kicks off tonight (weather permitting)
Posted Monday, February 15, at 11:32 AM

At this moment, district basketball games are still on schedule for three Plymouth County teams tonight. In Class 1A, Akron-Westfield and Remsen St. Mary's will engage in a grueling first round battle. The Westerners came out on top in the War Eagle Conference counter on December 1 with a 66-60 overtime victory. Derek Appley poured in a game-high 27 points to lead A-W to the win. Tanner Kockler scored 22 points and Beau Pick added 20 for the Hawks in the losing effort...

Regional playoffs begin tonight

Five Plymouth County schools begin the postseason tonight as the Class 1A regional girls basketball tournament begins. The Gehlen Catholic girls will look to make another postseason run after the Lady Jays advanced to the state volleyball tournament in November...

Packer Pink & What I Think

I'm a firm believer in the line "those who can't do, teach" - except that I don't teach, I write. I was never an athlete and I have the coordination of a one-year-old, but my passion for the game - any game really - is what drives me most. I was born in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisc., which is probably why I am a Packer fan. And I'm not one of those fans who likes the Packers when they are good and cheers for other teams from week to week or season to season. No, I am a die-hard - I bleed green and gold and I think the Cheesehead is one of the more stylish head-wear pieces ever created. After six years in Wisconsin, my family moved to Pella - where I consider to be my hometown. I went to Pella Christian High School - where I loved watching the sports! - and developed my love for photography and design. A side note - my sister (and one of my best friends) plays volleyball at Pella Christian, thus the occasional references to Eagles volleyball in my musings. I graduated with a degree in business and journalism from Northwestern College in Orange City in December 2007. I enjoy keeping tabs on my alma mater and the first teams I ever covered as a journalist. My brother plays football for the Raiders, so that adds even more incentive to continue bleeding red. Even though I am a sports-enthusiast of a seemingly male nature, I am also 100 percent girly-girl. I love shoes, purses and anything pink. Thus the blog title "Packer Pink and What I Think." I am quite the random person so I may vary from topic to topic, but at the end of the day, I'm pretty much just sports and pink.
