The Masters

Finally, it's time for the Masters. For me, the Masters marks the true beginning of spring. Most people are using lunar and solar calendars but personally, I use a calendar based on sporting events. If it is early February and the Super Bowl is on then I know there is still about eight more weeks of winter (wouldn't know it if you looked outside today though). Then we have beautiful March Madness which seemingly occupies an entire month. The title game seems to signal the end of winter as the showers of April begin. Here in April we have the Masters tournament at Augusta National and soon the NFL Draft will be in full gear and the countdown to football will begin.
As for the Masters, why is it that everyone expects Tiger Woods to win every single time? I understand that it's the media that puts Tiger on a pedestal but which isn't he allowed to be just a golfer, husband, father, role model and superstar? Just because he is a superstar in his respective sport doesn't mean he is going to win each event. If people expect him to win every single time he tees off then why do other golfers even compete? Are they competing for second place? Somehow I don't think they should be competing for the title of "First Place Behind Tiger." As we head into the weekend, Tiger is seven shots back of the lead and people are already claiming that "Augusta has finally tamed Tiger" and using other catchy but stupid catchphrases to put the man down. It's like people are expecting him to win but rooting for him to lose. After Tiger took the Massters by storm in 1997, Augusta National decided to "Tiger-proof" the course so it would make it an even closer finish the next year. At times I wonder if Tiger would ever purposely not try to win an event just to relieve some of the pressure? As absurd as that sounds, it might be his only way to be "normal" once again. Tiger Woods will be in the conversation as one of the best golfers of all time - definitely the best at the present moment. Just sit back and enjoy the show because sooner or later, Tiger is going to tame Augusta once again. |
