April Sadness

Well, March Madness is almost over. On Monday, the NCAA will crown its third men's champion of the season. Either UCLA, Kansas, North Carolina or Memphis will join Ohio State (National Invitational Tournament (NIT) champions and Tulsa (College Basketball Invitational (CBI) champions) on top of the podium this year. My thinking is that Roy Williams will have his UNC boys fired up to play his former team from Kansas. Ol' Roy knows that a loss tonight means that his team has bragging rights for the next few years and that people will question his decision to leave despite his NCAA title in 2005. I'm picking UNC to beat Kansas 82-76. On the other side of the bracket, I see a match-up of great potential and talent. Watching Memphis' Joey Dorsey and UCLA's freshman sensation Kevin Love will be just a preview of two future NBA players. I think Dorsey's experience will shine early but Love, who will undoubtedly have a more notable NBA career, will take over the game when it matters and lead his Bruins to the national title game as the Bruins win 73-70. When all is said and done, I see Ben Howland's squad from UCLA falling just a tad short. With UNC's Ty Lawson and "Pyscho T" Tyler Hansbrough, I think it will be just a little too much for UCLA's solid line-up. My hope is that with a North Carolina win, Hansbrough will finally go pro so I don't have to hear about him everytime I watch ESPN. Unfortunately for Howland, his big stud center will leave for the NBA leaving the Bruins with no Love.
On another note, I was browsing the 'net the other day and saw one of the most amazing acts of athletic achievement that I feel these eyes will ever see. I saw an article about Dustin Carter, a wrestler from Ohio, who just finished up his senior career with only a handful of loses. The twist in the story? Carter had both of his arms and legs amputated at the age of 5 due to a rare blood disorder. Naturally, I had to see this kid in action so I immediately went to Youtube and searched for him. What I found was something absolutely incrdedible. Video after video of Carter just dismantling his opponents. People commented that he had advantages because his upper body was comparable to those in the 160 pound weight class and he had a lower center of gravity. Are you kidding me people? This kid is the true meaning of adversity. If you find fault in a kid who doesn't let a "minor setback" as he called it stop him then why put him down? In fact, I think we should schedule a match between him and those who speak against him. I'll take $20 on Carter to win in less than three minutes.
Editor's note: Just watched the video again. Let's make it two minutes. |
