Why am I a Cubs fan?

Why am I a fan of the Loveable Losers? I know it was only the first game of the season at Wrigley today but already the haunts of the past 100 years came screaming through the TV as the Cubs' rally fell short this afternoon. After the 2803 delays due to inclement weather, the game finally got underway and it was an exciting pitchers duel between the Cub's Carlos Zambrano and the Brew Crew's (Milwaukee) Ben Sheets that featured a total of two hits through six innings. However, the hits starting coming and the Cubs saw themselves down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Lo and behold, my pick for Rookie of the Year Kosuke Fukudome - let's see if Webster's can find that one - smashed a 3-run homer giving the Chi-town faithful a glimmer of hope. But much like seasons of the past, the dream of the win came crashing down as the Brewers' Tony Gwynn - the Padres reincarnate (or his son) - hit a sacrifice fly to push the winning run across the board in the top of the 10th and misery ensued.
What does this mean for the Cubs? Well, there are still 161 games to go so we still have a chance to go 161-1! Orrrr not. But all is not lost. I do feel that Fukudome and Co. will right the ship after Opening Day and the Cubs will win the National League Central for the second consecutive year. Steve Bartman will continue to be unofficially banned from Wrigley and I have a feeling the Cubs will have "Bring Your Goat Day" (Google it) in the upcoming future to persuade destiny. If all else fails, wait until next year... Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

Appreciate the comment. It's a tough time being a Cubs fan. Most years I think I would be estatic hearing that people are picking the Cubbies to win the World Series. However, it just puts a huge target on their backs and I don't know if they have enough veterans to handle the pressure. As I write this, the Cubs are currently down 5-1 to the Brewers. That could give the Brew Crew a two-game lead in the NL Central and give the Cubs an 0-2 start. We need more goats...
I, too am a long sufferer, having listened to the Cubbies when Phil Cavaratta played first, Stan Hack 2nd, etc - in the 1945 series loss to the Tigers. We have tickets for 4 games this year.
