Olympics
Posted Wednesday, August 13, at 1:34 AM
I am addicted to the Olympics. There, I said. First step to an addiction is admitting it.

Granted, I work at night so I miss most of it but I am constantly on the internet keeping up with scores and medal results and the like. Last night I was fortunate enough to watch the US women's gymnastics team and I was amazed. What those girls do is absolutely incredible. If I attempted that - at my ripe old age of 22 - I would break a collarbone and would suffer from a damaged self-esteem.

However, I do have a bone to pick with the Olympics. There is no way on this green earth that some of those young ladies representing the Chinese gymnastics team were 16 and older. I felt like I was watching my little cousin compete and I do believe she's only six at the moment. (Sorry, I'm a horrible cousin.) I do believe that one girl in particular - I don't dare attempt to spell her name. I would butcher it as much as mine is butchered - looked to the ripe old age of nine. What happened to the art of sportmanship? These girls are supposed to be 16 and I am calling it now: the Chinese Olympic Federation will be exposed for a scandal involving the use of underage girls in competition.

I am boy/man enough to admit that the Chinese Olympians were fantastic. The US squad headed by Iowan Shawn Johnson represented themselves and the states well. If the Chinese participants are in fact 16 and older, then I'll admit that I was wrong.

Hopefully any necessary justice will be served.

Fair or Foul?

Not really sure what the blog title means? Me either. If I had to explain it, I'd say that it best describes this two-part blog you are about to read...or exit out of. Fair - It was a weekend of mixed emotions for this particular Sports Editor. I had the pleasure of experiencing my first Plymouth County Fair and I'd say the experience was worth the hype. ...

Wedding Season: The Only Non-Sports Season I Cover
Posted Wednesday, June 25, at 3:01 PM

I apologize for not blogging lately. I'm sure no one missed me but if you did, I apologize. The last few weeks have been have action-packed as I've been back and forth to Storm Lake to help my older brother prepare for his move and I've been to small town Nebraska in preparation for my best friends' wedding...

NBA Finals
Posted Wednesday, June 11, at 3:50 PM

Lakers and Celtics - isn't that the match-up that the NBA has been dreaming about all season? Every since Danny Ainge (Boston's general manager) brought together the "Big Three" in Ray Allen, "KG" (Kevin Garnett) and Paul Pierce, the championship was all but decided. However, the Lakers made some decent trades of their own, notably bring Pau Gasol to the team to replace Andrew Bynum...

Stupid lawsuits
Posted Monday, May 19, at 3:13 PM

It has been brought to my attention by my friends at the local gym - who shall remain nameless due to possible harassment by the paparazzi - that I have not blogged in nearly a month. For those who have been celebrating this idea then I apologize. I must rant and rant I will...

Top Sports Movies of All-Time
Posted Tuesday, April 22, at 2:25 PM

Last night I was flipping through the channels before bed and I caught the tail end of D2: The Mighty Ducks. It is my favorite sports movie so naturally, I watched it. Like my kids of my generation, I was a big fan of the Mighty Ducks' series (minus the third one - it was terrible). ...

Something I'd like to share
Posted Sunday, April 13, at 1:27 PM

This weekend I was cleaning my apartment and I found an editorial by Rick Reilly called "Getting a Second Wind" from the September 6, 2007 issue of "Sports Illustrated." Why is this important? This is one of the most inspiring pieces of literature and I wanted to share it with everyone. It's inspired me and currently hangs on my wall as a reminder. If you've ever needed an extra lift or some motivation to live life to the fullest, maybe this will help:...

The Masters
Posted Saturday, April 12, at 10:53 AM

Finally, it's time for the Masters. For me, the Masters marks the true beginning of spring. Most people are using lunar and solar calendars but personally, I use a calendar based on sporting events. If it is early February and the Super Bowl is on then I know there is still about eight more weeks of winter (wouldn't know it if you looked outside today though). ...

Ramblefest 2008
Posted Tuesday, April 8, at 8:37 PM

Wow, good thing I'm a sports editor and don't get paid to predict sports because I was way off on my NCAA men's picks. I had a 50% chance in each game and lost - TWICE! Good thing I wasn't in Las Vegas or at the Argosy in Sioux City because Saturday night would not have been a pretty one. ...

April Sadness
Posted Saturday, April 5, at 10:55 AM

Well, March Madness is almost over. On Monday, the NCAA will crown its third men's champion of the season. Either UCLA, Kansas, North Carolina or Memphis will join Ohio State (National Invitational Tournament (NIT) champions and Tulsa (College Basketball Invitational (CBI) champions) on top of the podium this year. ...
