Broncos and Colts

Posted Monday, January 11, 2010, at 2:57 PM

I'm certainly no sports expert, but I'm definitely what you would call a NFL enthusiast. I watch as many games as possible to the chagrin of those around me (like my mom who only picks out the teams by the ones with the "prettiest uniforms.") Is that sick or what.

And of course I have my favorite teams.

Nope, not the Minnesota Vikings.

The Denver Broncos.

And I'm still a proud fan after several quarterbacks since the famed John Elway and his magical arm that led my team to the Superbowl in the late 90s. I stuck with my team before those memorable years and I'm loyal to them today.

Even after the Kansas Chiefs trounced them Jan. 3, 2009 shooting down all hopes of making it to the playoffs, I'm still rooting for them. (And I just know my friend from high school was sitting in her house in Rapid City, S.D. gloating over that win as she is a diehard Chief's fan.)

I truly believe, eventually, the Broncos are going to find a quarterback, running back, receiver combination that can lead them back into the spotlight. And that will happen without Elway having to return from retirement. Yes, that was a jab at Brett Favre in case anyone missed it.

I know I'm not supposed to have more than one favorite team, or am I? But after living five years in Indiana, I also have a soft spot for the Indianapolis Colts. I mean I walked in their stadium, not during an actual football game, but nevertheless I stepped on the same turf that Peyton Manning, Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai (to name a few) walk on. I mean come on!

People were debating whether the Colts should have put backup quarterback Curtis Painter into the Dec. 27 game against the New York Jets. But I think, despite the 15-29 loss, that cost them their perfect season it was a good decision.

It kept Peyton healthy.

Now when it came to the 7-30 loss to the Buffalo Bills Jan. 3 to end the regular season, I put that down to the Colts aren't used to playing in wintery weather. Did you watch that game? It was blizzard-like conditions and of course players like the Colts used to an indoor dome are going to be at a disadvantage. I used to live in Indiana -- it doesn't blizzard there -- not like it does in New York anyway.

It's on to the post season for the Colts where they will meet up with some tough opponents and it won't be a cake walk for them.

But win or lose they'll still hold a special place in my NFL rankings.

I still consider my hometown to be Humboldt, S.D. but the longer I'm here in Le Mars the more I like it. I'm not expert on life by far, but in my blogs you'll find my thoughts on life's "lessons." Living and working in different states means I have had the opportunity to look at the way different types of people take on our ever-changing world. In my blog I'll be sharing with you some of the things I've learned along the way or observed. And of course you'll get a taste of the topics I'm passionate about like my nephews, friends and family. As always, I appreciate your questions and comments.
