Getting Away, Or Not

As an experienced newspaper writer, reporter, I always want to make sure my writing stays neutral, enticing and correct.
Well for some reason last week I thought I was still in Indiana and couldn't count. As a reporter in a new town and position both hit me hard. So anyway I needed a weekend away from it all so figured go home and cry on mom's shoulder. Things didn't quite work that way. First there was a blizzard Friday which I chose to drive through because "God hates a coward." When I reached the South Dakota border on the other side of Akron, the snow was blowing sideway, but not sticking to the roads. So I kept going. The closer I got to Sioux Falls I began to see vehicles with snow piled on them, it was still doing the sideways snowing, but I kept going. Sioux Falls wasn't so bad, but I had to head west to Humboldt, SD. It was a blizzard. You know the kind of snow that closes interstates. But I kept going, couldn't turn around then. So as I'm crawling along Interstate 90 west of Sioux Falls, had to drive in the passing lane 'cause of the drifts, I was wondering what kind of cruel joke is life. I wonder if it we should plan for another blizzard in May? That entrance into SD should have been my first clue that the weekend was only going to get worse. My older brother picked Saturday to move... so what choice did we have but to be out on some very nasty roads early Saturday morning. When you live in the country they don't think the roads need to be plowed. Took most of the day to get him moved, but the one plus of this nasty day was that I got to play with my nephew, Jacob. He's almost two and so cute! Even when he's throwing a fit he's cute. Later Saturday night I went to a play. My youngest brother, a theater major at Augustana, had a major part. The play was just getting good when the lead lady exited the stage in a loud crash. Soon after, the play ended as the actress was injured and couldn't go on. She had a compound fracture of the leg. She's doing better now thank goodness. Well I thought Sunday has to be better. Wrong again. As I'm driving home from church and thinking about who knows what, this little black dog darts across the road in front of me. I, of course tried to stop, but couldn't. I could see him bleeding in the ditch. I tracked down his owner and gave the bad news. Thankfully they didn't blame me. But I did. So my lesson for this week... Stay home. |
I still consider my hometown to be Humboldt, S.D. but the longer I'm here in Le Mars the more I like it. I'm not expert on life by far, but in my blogs you'll find my thoughts on life's "lessons." Living and working in different states means I have had the opportunity to look at the way different types of people take on our ever-changing world. In my blog I'll be sharing with you some of the things I've learned along the way or observed. And of course you'll get a taste of the topics I'm passionate about like my nephews, friends and family. As always, I appreciate your questions and comments.
