"The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow"
Posted Friday, February 19, at 4:56 PM
I've been a bit down in the dumps this week, well, because I'm sick of snow and cold and more snow and more cold...

But my family's antics cheered me so I thought I'd share them with you.

My mom, she's going to be 64 this year, told me the other day the enjoyment she experienced from eating a Blow Pop. You remember what they are right? The sucker with the bubble gum inside?

She works in collections at a credit card company in Sioux Falls. If you've ever had that kind of job, you know sometimes it can be rather boring with people hanging up, no answers and the like.

So anyway mom told me about unwrapping that green apple flavored sucker and putting it in her mouth. She rolled it around in her mouth sucking on it for a long time -- all the way to the bubble gum inside. And then she proceeded to chew that.

"Do you know how long it's been since I've eaten a sucker? Or chewed bubble gum?" Mom asked me on the telephone.

I believe she was in shock to have enjoyed this treat that was popular in my childhood though I doubt in hers.

I laughed with her and asked if she blew bubbles too. She did not afraid that would attract too much attention.

Thanks Mom for reminding me it's the small things that make life enjoyable.

The other night I called my youngest brother Andrew, he's gonna be 24. He's in like his fifth year at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.

The poor guy has no car cause his is broken and no job so he can't get it fixed. So he has to walk anywhere he wants to go.

And he has no pots and pans so he eats a lot of pizza, sandwiches and cereal, but he still has a positive spirit. (That's why I called him.)

So he's telling me about this German paper he's trying to write, throwing in some German language so I have no idea what he's saying, which lightens the mood even more.

He tells me he's having a tough time with the paper because his German's not so good. Then he goes on to explain what the paper is about. I'm sorry, Andrew, but I have no idea what you were talking about.

But then Andrew tells me about his piano lessons. He's been taking them off and on since he was a little guy. Now, he has keys to the music room usually reserved for music majors.

Andrew loves music and theater and I could hear the excitement in his voice as he told me that now he gets to play on the baby grand pianos and the like.

And, he says, his playing is terrible but striking the chords on those elegant pianos makes all the years of lessons worthwhile and the wrong notes sound better.

Thanks Andrew for reminding me that hard work pays off.

Two Year Highlights
Posted Thursday, February 11, at 5:02 PM

Two years today writing for the Daily Sentinel. When I look back, I wonder 'how the heck did I make it this far.' Just kidding. I usually don't get lost anymore. I emphasize the word usually, but I have to admit I'm still challenged by the southeast, southwest, northeast, northwest being on the same street sign...

When was the last time you sat down with a pen or pencil and wrote someone a note or a letter? And the recent holidays don't count because for many those are "special" times. How about the last time you picked up the telephone, cell phone or not, and actually called someone to chat? Remember those conversations where the person on the other end of the line could hear the inflection in your voice to know what you were thinking...

Broncos and Colts

I'm certainly no sports expert, but I'm definitely what you would call a NFL enthusiast. I watch as many games as possible to the chagrin of those around me (like my mom who only picks out the teams by the ones with the "prettiest uniforms.") Is that sick or what...

Don't Crowd the Car
Posted Friday, January 1, at 4:03 PM

Winter. I dislike it but since I live in Iowa I have to deal with it. And that which comes along with it like snow, freezing cold temperatures, more snow, frost-covered windshields, slippery sidewalks, shoveling, freezing rain and dangerous road conditions...

My ears are ringing
Posted Sunday, October 18, at 4:50 PM

Do you remember rotary telephones? You know the one where you put your finger in the dial and spin. The tip of my finger always got caught under the plastic and irritated me. They had spiral cords, some were really long so you could move around the room while others so short you had to practically stand on top of the telephone, because they plugged into a wall phone jack...

A History Lesson in fossils
Posted Friday, September 4, at 12:18 PM

Last weekend some friends and I visited Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, which is between the towns of Royal and Orchard in Nebraska. It was quite an eye-opening experience for me as I have never seen 12-million-year-old fossils unearthed in the same positions -- some with remnants of their last meal inside -- as they died...

Visit turned Adventure
Posted Monday, August 10, at 4:04 PM

Last week my baby brother Andrew (well he's almost 23) brought his girlfriend, also a friend of mine, to Le Mars for a visit before she returned to Russia. Natalia or Nata as she's known in the Midwest is from St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, originally, but currently is the artistic director of the Russian State Theater in Tallinn, Estonia...

Tourists at home
Posted Tuesday, July 28, at 4:54 PM

I've heard about Sergeant Floyd and his burial place in Sioux City, but I never really got the connection until this past weekend. My parents came for a visit and we did the tourist thing right here in Sioux City. I have to say my dad and I were most impressed with the Sergeant Floyd River Museum, the ship. It was really neat to stand in there and look at history...

"Kids say the darndest things"
Posted Wednesday, June 17, at 3:26 PM

My nephew, Jacob, celebrated his third birthday last week. We had a party and everything. It was while he was opening his gifts that I began to wonder just how much influence people, television and siblings have on these little guys. Jacob crowed delightedly as he unwrapped what he calls a "shoot gun." It was a toy miniature version of a rifle that made the slightly muffled banging sound...

I still consider my hometown to be Humboldt, S.D. but the longer I'm here in Le Mars the more I like it. I'm not expert on life by far, but in my blogs you'll find my thoughts on life's "lessons." Living and working in different states means I have had the opportunity to look at the way different types of people take on our ever-changing world. In my blog I'll be sharing with you some of the things I've learned along the way or observed. And of course you'll get a taste of the topics I'm passionate about like my nephews, friends and family. As always, I appreciate your questions and comments.
